I grew up in Newcastle and moved to Nottingham to do a joint honours degree in biochemistry and genetics. I went into teaching as I love working with young people.
I taught science, specialising in Chemistry for 5 years in Derbyshire. Before moving up to Edinburgh I taught at another two schools short-term in Nottinghamshire. One of the schools was being taken over by the other, so I've had experience of an excellent and a failing school. Before I taught science, I taught English at a university in China for two years.
My teaching style focused on individual needs, as I find it extremely rewarding helping each person achieve their personal goals. It is extremely important to me that a student grows in confidence, and that comes from helping them to understand and guiding them to working out the answers where that is appropriate. My experience as a teacher means that I have met students ranging in ability and personality. This has given me the opportunity to collect a great number of strategies and an understanding of how to encourage them.
